Lycopene, a carotenoid found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits, has been investigated for its potential role in supporting cardiovascular health, including the management of hypertension (high blood pressure). Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have suggested that lycopene supplementation or increased dietary intake can have a modest, but statistically significant, effect on lowering blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. The proposed mechanisms involve lycopene's antioxidant properties, its ability to improve endothelial function, and its possible effect in reducing oxidative stress, which is a recognized factor in the development of hypertension.

A meta-analysis published in the journal Journal of Hypertension (2014) pooled data from randomized controlled trials and found that lycopene supplementation significantly reduced systolic blood pressure in prehypertensive and hypertensive individuals, though the effect on diastolic pressure was less consistent. The magnitude of blood pressure reduction observed was modest (typically a few mmHg), but clinically relevant, especially as part of a broader dietary and lifestyle intervention.

While the overall quality of evidence is moderate and more large-scale, long-term studies are warranted to further clarify lycopene's role, current evidence justifies its consideration as an adjunct dietary strategy for blood pressure control. It is important to note that lycopene should not replace standard antihypertensive medications but may offer additional benefits when included as part of a heart-healthy diet.
