Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Magnesium supplementation, including forms such as magnesium citrate malate, has some scientific basis for supporting the management of hypertension (high blood pressure). Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have investigated the effect of magnesium on blood pressure. A 2016 meta-analysis published in Hypertension (Zhang et al.) found that magnesium supplementation led to modest but statistically significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, particularly in individuals with magnesium deficiency or pre-existing hypertension. The typical reductions observed were about 2-4 mmHg for systolic and 1-2 mmHg for diastolic pressure.

The proposed mechanism involves magnesium’s role as a natural calcium channel blocker, promoting vasodilation and reducing vascular resistance. Magnesium also influences endothelial function and the regulation of vascular tone. Magnesium citrate malate is a highly bioavailable form, meaning it is well absorbed and can effectively raise serum magnesium levels.

However, while there is scientific evidence supporting magnesium supplementation for modest blood pressure reduction, it is not considered a first-line or primary treatment for hypertension. The overall quality of evidence is moderate, and the blood pressure-lowering effects are generally small compared to standard antihypertensive medications. Thus, magnesium citrate malate may be beneficial as an adjunct to lifestyle changes and conventional therapies, especially in individuals who are magnesium deficient.
