Marine lipids, particularly omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) derived from fish oil, have been scientifically studied for their effects on cardiovascular health, including hypertension (high blood pressure). Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that marine lipid supplementation can lead to modest reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, especially in individuals with untreated hypertension or elevated blood pressure.
The mechanism by which marine lipids may lower blood pressure is thought to involve improvements in endothelial function, reduction of vascular inflammation, and favorable effects on lipid profiles. Omega-3 fatty acids may also enhance nitric oxide production, contributing to vasodilation and reduced arterial stiffness. Notably, the American Heart Association recognizes the cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, although it stops short of recommending routine supplementation for blood pressure control in the general population.
The evidence is strongest for higher doses (typically >2 grams per day of EPA and DHA combined), with the blood pressure-lowering effect being more pronounced in hypertensive populations compared to normotensive individuals. While the effect size is generally modest (on the order of 2-5 mmHg reduction), it is clinically meaningful when considered as part of an overall strategy for cardiovascular risk reduction. Overall, the use of marine lipids for hypertension is supported by a body of scientific evidence, though it should be considered as adjunctive to, not a replacement for, standard antihypertensive therapies.
