Oat bran has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing hypertension, though the evidence is modest. Oat bran is high in soluble fiber, particularly beta-glucan, which is well-documented for its cholesterol-lowering effects. Some studies have also explored whether the consumption of oat products, including oat bran, can lower blood pressure. Meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials suggest that diets rich in whole oats or oat bran may lead to small but statistically significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, especially in individuals with mild hypertension or those at risk for cardiovascular disease. The proposed mechanisms include improved endothelial function and reduced arterial stiffness, possibly due to the effects of beta-glucan on lipid profiles and inflammation.

However, while the cholesterol-lowering effects are stronger and more consistent in the literature, the antihypertensive effects are relatively modest, with average reductions often in the range of 2–5 mmHg. The quality and size of studies specifically investigating oat bran (as opposed to whole oats or oatmeal) are limited, and the evidence does not support oat bran as a primary intervention for hypertension. Nevertheless, incorporating oat bran into a heart-healthy diet may offer additional benefits as part of a broader dietary approach to cardiovascular health. Overall, the use of oat bran for hypertension is supported by moderate scientific evidence but is not considered a mainstay therapy.
