Potassium bicarbonate is sometimes used to support the management of hypertension, and there is scientific evidence to justify its consideration. The effect is largely attributed to the potassium ion, rather than the bicarbonate component. Multiple studies have shown that increased dietary potassium intake can help lower blood pressure, particularly in individuals with hypertension or those consuming a high-sodium diet. The mechanism involves potassium’s ability to promote natriuresis (excretion of sodium in urine), relax blood vessel walls, and modulate neural and hormonal factors related to blood pressure regulation.
A 2017 meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology concluded that higher potassium intake is associated with reduced blood pressure and decreased risk of stroke. Most clinical trials use potassium chloride, but potassium bicarbonate has also been investigated. For example, a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1997) demonstrated that potassium bicarbonate supplementation significantly reduced blood pressure in older adults. The bicarbonate form may offer additional benefits by countering dietary acid load, but the antihypertensive effect is primarily due to potassium.
However, potassium supplementation should be used cautiously, especially in individuals with renal impairment or those on medications affecting potassium balance. While the evidence supports a beneficial effect of potassium (including potassium bicarbonate) in reducing blood pressure, it is less robust than for standard antihypertensive therapies. Thus, it may be considered as an adjunct to other lifestyle and pharmacological interventions.
