Soy and Hypertension: Scientific Evidence

Soy has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating hypertension (high blood pressure), primarily due to its rich content of isoflavones—plant-derived compounds with estrogen-like activity. Several observational and clinical studies suggest that regular soy consumption may have a modest blood pressure-lowering effect, particularly in people with prehypertension or mild hypertension.

A number of meta-analyses have found that soy protein or isoflavone supplementation can lead to small but significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. For example, a 2012 meta-analysis in Circulation reviewed randomized controlled trials and concluded that soy isoflavones reduced systolic blood pressure by about 2-3 mmHg in adults. The effect was more pronounced in hypertensive subjects compared to normotensive individuals.

The proposed mechanisms include improvements in endothelial function, antioxidant effects, and possible modulation of the renin-angiotensin system. However, the magnitude of the effect is generally modest and not as strong as that seen with antihypertensive medications or certain dietary patterns (such as the DASH diet).

While the evidence is not overwhelming, it is consistent enough to support the idea that soy may be a beneficial part of a dietary approach to blood pressure management. There is no significant traditional use of soy specifically for hypertension; the evidence is largely scientific and contemporary.
