Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is sometimes promoted for supporting hypertension (high blood pressure), primarily due to its high content of potassium. Scientific evidence indicates that diets rich in potassium can help counteract the effects of sodium and support blood pressure regulation. The American Heart Association and other reputable organizations recommend increased potassium intake as part of dietary strategies for blood pressure control.
Sweet potatoes are a good source of potassium, with a single medium-sized baked sweet potato providing around 12% of the recommended daily value.
