Calories, as a measure of energy intake from food, are fundamentally important for the function of the hypothalamus, a critical brain region involved in regulating appetite, energy balance, and metabolic processes. The hypothalamus monitors and responds to the body’s energy status through various hormonal and nutrient signals. There is robust scientific evidence demonstrating that adequate caloric intake is essential for proper hypothalamic function. When caloric intake is insufficient, the hypothalamus initiates physiological and behavioral responses to restore energy balance, such as increasing hunger and reducing energy expenditure (Morton et al., 2014). Conversely, chronic excess calorie consumption can contribute to hypothalamic dysfunction, affecting glucose metabolism and increasing the risk of obesity (Thaler et al., 2013). Numerous studies in both animals and humans have elucidated the mechanisms by which the hypothalamus senses and responds to caloric intake via hormones such as leptin, insulin, and ghrelin. Thus, calories are not an "ingredient" per se, but their presence and regulation directly support the health and function of the hypothalamic system, with extensive scientific validation.
