Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In these systems, licorice is often used as an adaptogen or tonic to support the adrenal glands and overall vitality, rather than being specifically targeted at hypothyroidism. However, some traditional practitioners have historically included licorice in formulations for symptoms that overlap with hypothyroidism, such as fatigue or weakness, based on its perceived ability to "harmonize" the body's functions and support energy. The scientific literature directly linking licorice root to the treatment or support of hypothyroidism is very limited. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest that compounds in licorice, such as glycyrrhizin, may influence cortisol metabolism and have mild anti-inflammatory effects, but there is no robust evidence that licorice root supports thyroid hormone production or corrects hypothyroid states. Most clinical research on licorice focuses on its effects on the adrenal axis, not the thyroid. Furthermore, licorice can have significant side effects, including increasing blood pressure and causing electrolyte imbalances, which may be of concern in people with thyroid dysfunction.
