Evidence supporting the use of: Seleno Methionine
For the health condition: Hypothyroid
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Seleno Methionine is an organic form of selenium, an essential trace element required for the synthesis and activity of several selenoproteins, including the enzymes glutathione peroxidase and the iodothyronine deiodinases. The latter are critical for thyroid hormone metabolism, particularly in converting thyroxine (T4) to the active hormone triiodothyronine (T3). Selenium deficiency has been associated with impaired thyroid function and increased risk of thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease).
Clinical studies suggest that selenium supplementation, often in the form of Seleno Methionine, may reduce thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, which is a common cause of hypothyroidism. For example, several randomized controlled trials have found modest reductions in TPOAb titers with selenium supplementation, potentially reflecting reduced autoimmune activity in the thyroid gland. However, the direct impact of selenium supplementation on thyroid hormone levels and overt hypothyroid symptoms is less clear, and results are mixed.
Most evidence supports selenium supplementation primarily in cases where dietary selenium intake is low or deficiency is likely. The benefit for all hypothyroid patients, especially those with normal selenium status, is not well established. Thus, while the use of Seleno Methionine for hypothyroidism has a scientific basis, particularly in selenium-deficient individuals or those with autoimmune thyroiditis, the strength of evidence for broad use is moderate.
