Evidence supporting the use of: Alpha-galactosidase
For the health condition: Indigestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Alpha-galactosidase is an enzyme supplement commonly used to support digestion, particularly to reduce symptoms of indigestion such as gas and bloating associated with the consumption of complex carbohydrates found in beans, legumes, and certain vegetables. Its use is primarily justified by scientific evidence rather than tradition. Alpha-galactosidase breaks down oligosaccharides (such as raffinose and stachyose) in the gut, which are otherwise not digested in the small intestine and pass into the colon, where they are fermented by bacteria, producing gas and discomfort.
Several clinical studies have demonstrated that alpha-galactosidase supplementation (commercially known as Beano and similar products) can significantly reduce gas production and associated symptoms when taken with foods rich in these carbohydrates. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences (1994) found that participants consuming alpha-galactosidase with a high-fiber meal experienced less flatulence and discomfort compared to placebo. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews support these findings, generally rating the evidence as moderate to strong for its efficacy in reducing gastrointestinal symptoms related to carbohydrate intolerance.
While alpha-galactosidase does not treat all forms of indigestion, its targeted action for a common cause (fermentable carbohydrate-induced symptoms) makes it a scientifically validated option. It is considered safe for most individuals, though those with galactosemia should avoid it. In summary, alpha-galactosidase is a well-studied, evidence-based supplement for specific types of indigestion, especially gas and bloating after eating certain vegetables and legumes.
