Evidence supporting the use of: Curcumin
For the health condition: Indigestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric (Curcuma longa), has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for digestive ailments including indigestion (also known as dyspepsia). Beyond tradition, several scientific studies provide support for its use in this context. Curcumin exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and choleretic (bile-stimulating) properties, which are believed to contribute to its beneficial effects on digestive health.
Clinical evidence includes randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses. For example, a 2019 meta-analysis (Phytotherapy Research, 2019) reported that turmeric and curcumin supplementation improved symptoms of functional dyspepsia compared to placebo. Another study published in BMJ Open Gastroenterology (2023) found that curcumin was as effective as omeprazole, a standard proton pump inhibitor, in reducing symptoms of dyspepsia over a four-week period.
The mechanisms by which curcumin aids digestion are thought to relate to its ability to reduce gastric inflammation, stimulate bile production, and modulate gut microbiota. While curcumin is generally well-tolerated, its bioavailability is low, and formulations to enhance absorption are often recommended in clinical settings.
Overall, while more large-scale studies are needed to confirm optimal dosing and long-term safety, the current body of evidence supports the cautious use of curcumin as an adjunct for the management of indigestion, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
