Indian Gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica, commonly known as Amla) has a long-standing history in traditional Indian medicine, particularly Ayurveda, for the management of digestive complaints including indigestion (also known as dyspepsia). Ayurvedic texts describe Amla as a "triphala" component and as a "rasayana", or rejuvenator, believed to balance the digestive system, stimulate gastric juices, and reduce acidity. Traditionally, it is used as a tonic to improve appetite and aid in the assimilation of food.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited but growing evidence supporting these traditional claims. Some studies indicate that Amla may have gastroprotective properties due to its antioxidant content, ability to reduce gastric acid secretion, and modulation of gastrointestinal motility. A few small clinical studies and animal models have suggested that Amla extract can help protect against gastric ulcers and may improve symptoms of dyspepsia. However, the quality and scale of these studies are generally low, and comprehensive, high-quality clinical trials are lacking.
