Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus species are commonly used probiotics that have been studied for various gastrointestinal conditions, including indigestion (also referred to as dyspepsia). The scientific evidence supporting their use for indigestion is limited but emerging. Some clinical trials and systematic reviews have investigated the effects of probiotics, including unspecified Lactobacillus strains, on symptoms such as bloating, discomfort, and irregular digestion. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of gut microbiota, enhancement of mucosal barrier function, and reduction of low-grade inflammation, all of which may contribute to symptom relief in functional dyspepsia. However, the majority of studies focus on broader gastrointestinal complaints (like irritable bowel syndrome or general gut health) rather than specifically on indigestion. Results are mixed, with some studies showing modest benefits and others showing no significant effect compared to placebo. Additionally, the heterogeneity in probiotic strains, dosages, and study designs limits generalizability. Current clinical guidelines do not universally endorse probiotics as a primary treatment for indigestion, but some gastroenterology societies acknowledge their potential adjunctive role. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary clinical evidence, it is not robust, and further high-quality, strain-specific research is needed to clarify the efficacy of Lactobacillus for indigestion.
