Evidence supporting the use of: Lipase
For the health condition: Indigestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lipase is an enzyme that helps break down dietary fats into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the intestine. The use of supplemental lipase (often as part of a broader "pancreatic enzyme" preparation) to support or treat indigestion, particularly when it is related to fat malabsorption or pancreatic insufficiency, is well-established in clinical practice. Scientific evidence supports its use especially in conditions such as chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or after pancreatic surgery—situations where the body's natural production of digestive enzymes is insufficient. In these cases, patients often experience symptoms of indigestion, such as bloating, fatty stools, and abdominal discomfort due to poor fat digestion. Clinical trials and guidelines recommend pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, which includes lipase, to alleviate these symptoms and improve nutrient absorption.
However, for general indigestion (dyspepsia) in people with normal pancreatic function, the evidence supporting lipase supplementation is much weaker. Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest potential benefit in cases of non-specific indigestion or functional dyspepsia, but larger, well-designed trials are lacking. As a result, while lipase is scientifically validated for treating indigestion related to enzyme deficiency, its use in broader cases of indigestion is not as strongly supported. Overall, the evidence merits a moderate rating.
