Neral is a natural compound found in several essential oils, such as lemongrass and lemon balm. Its use for indigestion is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine rather than strong scientific validation. Historically, plants containing neral, especially lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), have been used in various cultures for their soothing effects on the digestive system, including relief from bloating, gas, and mild digestive discomfort. The traditional belief is that the essential oils containing neral may help relax smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, thus alleviating symptoms of indigestion.

However, scientific studies specifically evaluating neral’s effectiveness for indigestion are very limited. Most available evidence comes from animal studies or in vitro experiments assessing the broader essential oil rather than neral in isolation. Clinical trials on lemon balm and related oils sometimes suggest a mild benefit for digestive complaints, but these studies often involve complex mixtures of compounds, making it difficult to attribute effects directly to neral.
