Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Orris root (Iris germanica or Iris pallida) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and Middle Eastern traditions. It has been included in herbal remedies and liqueurs intended to aid digestion, such as the French liqueur "Chartreuse" and the Italian "Alchermes." The traditional rationale for its use generally centers on its aromatic properties, which were believed to stimulate appetite and digestive function. However, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for indigestion. Modern clinical studies on orris root’s direct benefits for digestive complaints are lacking, and its pharmacological actions relating to digestion remain unclear. Some of its traditional use may be attributed to its inclusion as a flavoring and aromatic agent rather than as a primary active treatment for indigestion. Furthermore, orris root contains compounds that can be allergenic or irritating, and its internal use is not widely recommended in contemporary herbal practice. In summary, orris root’s use for indigestion is justified by tradition, but there is minimal scientific validation, and the evidence base is weak.
