Piperine, the active compound found in black pepper (Piper nigrum), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for a variety of gastrointestinal complaints, including indigestion (also known as dyspepsia). Traditional texts and ethnobotanical records describe black pepper and its extracts as “digestive stimulants,” believed to enhance appetite, promote secretion of digestive juices, and improve gastrointestinal motility.
However, direct scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of piperine for treating indigestion in humans is limited. Most modern research on piperine focuses on its bioenhancing properties—its ability to increase the absorption of other nutrients and drugs—rather than its direct effects on digestive symptoms. Some animal studies and in vitro research suggest that piperine can increase the activity of digestive enzymes and stimulate bile secretion, which could theoretically aid digestion.
