Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has a long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for digestive complaints, including indigestion. Modern scientific research provides some validation for these traditional claims. The primary active compound in turmeric, curcumin, exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may benefit gastrointestinal health. Clinical studies have investigated turmeric and curcumin for dyspepsia (indigestion), with some randomized controlled trials suggesting that turmeric extracts can reduce symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort compared to placebo. One notable study published in Journal of Clinical Medicine (2021) found that turmeric extract was as effective as omeprazole (a standard antacid) in alleviating functional dyspepsia symptoms over 28 days.

The mechanisms proposed include increased bile secretion, reduction of gastric inflammation, and modulation of gut microbiota. However, most studies have used standardized extracts with higher curcumin content than culinary turmeric, and sample sizes are often small, with short durations. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally conclude that turmeric may have a modest benefit for indigestion, but more large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are needed for conclusive evidence. Overall, the use of turmeric for indigestion is supported by both traditional use and emerging scientific evidence, though the latter is not yet robust.
