White Mustard (Sinapis alba) has been traditionally used in various cultures as a remedy for digestive issues, including indigestion. Historical records, especially from European herbal medicine, mention the use of white mustard seeds as a mild stimulant for the digestive system. The seeds were sometimes consumed whole or ground and mixed with food to promote gastric secretion and help with sluggish digestion. The rationale behind its use is that the pungent compounds in mustard seeds, mainly sinalbin, may mildly irritate the gastric mucosa, thereby stimulating the production of digestive juices and improving appetite. However, there is very limited modern clinical research to substantiate these traditional claims. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on old herbal texts, rather than rigorous scientific studies. Contemporary herbal medicine references often list white mustard as a digestive stimulant, but this is not supported by well-designed human trials. Some laboratory studies have investigated the pharmacology of mustard seeds, but not specifically in relation to indigestion.
