Abuta, a common name for several plant species in the Menispermaceae family (notably Abuta grandifolia and Cissampelos pareira), has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in South America. Indigenous communities have employed Abuta preparations for a variety of ailments, including infections, fevers, and inflammatory conditions. The traditional application often involves decoctions or infusions of the root or stem, administered to treat symptoms that are commonly associated with infections such as fever or general malaise.
Scientific investigation into Abuta's antimicrobial properties is limited. Some in vitro studies have suggested mild antibacterial and antifungal activity in extracts of related species (especially Cissampelos pareira), but these findings are preliminary and not sufficient to establish clinical efficacy or safety.
