Evidence supporting the use of: Neem tree
For the health condition: Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Neem (Azadirachta indica) has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, particularly in Ayurveda, for its purported ability to treat and prevent infections. However, beyond its traditional applications, modern scientific research has begun to validate some of these claims. Various studies have demonstrated that neem contains bioactive compounds such as nimbidin, azadirachtin, and nimbolide, which exhibit antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. In vitro experiments have shown neem extracts to be effective against a range of pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhi, as well as fungi like Candida albicans. Neem oil and leaf extracts have also demonstrated activity against certain viruses, although this is less well-documented and primarily limited to laboratory studies. Despite these promising findings, most of the evidence is preclinical, with relatively few well-designed human clinical trials validating the efficacy of neem for infection treatment in real-world settings. Some small studies have suggested benefits for oral infections (such as reducing dental plaque and gingivitis), but the data for systemic infections are less robust. Overall, while the traditional use of neem for infection finds support in modern pharmacological studies, the clinical evidence base remains limited. Further research, especially controlled human trials, is needed to fully establish the effectiveness and safety profile of neem as an anti-infective agent.
