Evidence supporting the use of: Rosa laevigata
For the health condition: Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rosa laevigata, also known as Cherokee rose, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, the fruit of Rosa laevigata (known as "jin ying zi") is used to treat a variety of conditions, including diarrhea, urinary tract issues, and sometimes infections. The traditional rationale for its use in infections is based on its purported astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help the body resist or recover from pathogenic influences. However, the historical literature provides only general references to its use in clearing "damp-heat" and treating "toxicity," concepts that do not directly correspond to modern understandings of infection. Modern scientific studies have identified some antibacterial and antioxidant compounds in Rosa laevigata extracts, such as flavonoids and triterpenoids. In vitro experiments have demonstrated weak-to-moderate antibacterial effects against certain bacteria, but the evidence is limited and largely preclinical. There are no high-quality clinical trials or robust scientific evidence specifically validating its use for treating infections in humans. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition and supported by some preliminary laboratory findings, the overall evidence is modest and not sufficient to conclusively support its effectiveness for infection.
