Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea salt has a long history of traditional use in supporting the treatment of infections, particularly for oral, skin, and wound care. Before the advent of modern antiseptics and antibiotics, saline solutions made from sea salt were commonly used to clean wounds and rinse sore throats or mouths. The traditional rationale is that salt can draw out moisture from bacteria through osmosis, thereby inhibiting their growth. For example, saltwater gargles are still recommended in many cultures for sore throats and minor oral infections. Additionally, salt baths or compresses have been used for minor skin infections and to promote healing. While these practices are rooted in tradition, some limited scientific evidence supports the use of saline (not specifically sea salt) for wound cleaning and as a mild antiseptic. Saline rinses can help reduce bacterial load and support wound healing, but they are not a replacement for modern antibiotics or antiseptics in serious infections. The antimicrobial effect is modest, and the main benefit is mechanical cleansing rather than direct antibacterial action. Sea salt itself is not superior to other forms of salt in this usage. Overall, the use of sea salt for infection is primarily based on traditional practices, with some weak scientific basis for saline’s cleansing properties. It should not be relied upon as the sole or primary treatment for infections, especially those that are moderate to severe.
