Evidence supporting the use of: Skunkvine
For the health condition: Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Skunkvine (Paederia foetida) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia, for the treatment of infections and inflammatory conditions. In traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine, skunkvine has been used for its purported antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. Preparations made from its leaves, stems, or roots are often applied to wounds, ulcers, or consumed as decoctions to address internal and external infections. The rationale for its use is largely based on empirical knowledge and longstanding herbal practice rather than rigorous scientific validation.
While there are some preliminary scientific studies indicating that extracts of Paederia foetida may exhibit antibacterial and antifungal activity in vitro, these findings are limited and not sufficient to conclusively support its efficacy in treating infections in humans. Most available research consists of laboratory assays rather than clinical trials, and the active compounds responsible for such effects are not fully characterized. As such, the use of skunkvine for infection is best described as traditional, with modest supporting evidence from laboratory studies but lacking robust clinical validation.
