Evidence supporting the use of: 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I
For the health condition: Infection (bacterial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I is a bioactive compound isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. In recent years, a number of in vitro studies have demonstrated that 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I exhibits antibacterial activity against various pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). For example, several laboratory studies have shown that this compound can inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, potentially through disruption of bacterial cell membranes and inhibition of essential bacterial enzymes. There is also evidence that it can enhance the efficacy of conventional antibiotics when used in combination.
However, the evidence remains largely preclinical, with no robust clinical trials in humans that directly evaluate the efficacy or safety of 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I for treating bacterial infections. Most research is limited to cell culture and animal models. While its antibacterial mechanism has been partially elucidated and the results are promising, direct clinical application has not yet been substantiated. Therefore, the use of 15,16-Dihydrotanshinone I to support or treat bacterial infection is based on emerging scientific evidence, but its translation into real-world therapy awaits further validation in clinical settings.
