Abuta, a term commonly referring to plants in the Abuta genus (notably Abuta grandifolia or Cissampelos pareira, sometimes referred to as “False Abuta”), has a history of traditional use in South American and Amazonian ethnomedicine. Indigenous peoples have used Abuta preparations to manage various ailments, including bacterial infections, fever, and inflammation. The use is mainly based on empirical traditional knowledge, where decoctions or infusions of the plant are administered for infectious diseases, particularly of the urinary and reproductive tracts. Phytochemical studies have identified alkaloids and other secondary metabolites in Abuta species with in vitro antimicrobial activity. However, these findings are preliminary, and comprehensive clinical studies in humans confirming efficacy or safety for treating bacterial infections are lacking. The rating of 2 reflects the existence of traditional use and some laboratory evidence, but the absence of robust clinical validation.
