Ajoene is an organosulfur compound derived from garlic (Allium sativum) and has been investigated for its antibacterial properties. Scientific studies have shown that ajoene possesses significant in vitro antibacterial activity against a range of pathogenic bacteria, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. The mechanism of action is thought to involve disruption of bacterial cell membranes and inhibition of quorum sensing, which is crucial for bacterial communication and biofilm formation. Several peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated that ajoene can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), and other clinically relevant bacteria. In addition, ajoene has been shown to synergize with conventional antibiotics, potentially reducing the required dosage of standard drugs and combating antibiotic resistance.

Despite these promising in vitro and some in vivo findings, clinical studies in humans are limited. Most available evidence comes from laboratory and animal research, and there is a lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials to conclusively establish efficacy and safety in humans. Nevertheless, the existing body of preclinical scientific evidence provides a rationale for further exploration of ajoene as an adjunctive or alternative therapy for bacterial infections. Thus, current support for ajoene’s use in treating bacterial infections is grounded in scientific research, though further clinical validation is necessary.
