Evidence supporting the use of: Bacteria
For the health condition: Infection (bacterial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Bacteria are indeed used to support or treat bacterial infections, primarily in the form of probiotics and through the therapeutic use of “good” or beneficial bacteria. The scientific foundation for this approach is well-established, particularly for certain types of infections such as Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), which introduces a healthy mix of gut bacteria from a donor into a patient’s intestines, has shown high efficacy in treating recurrent CDI that has not responded to standard antibiotics. Clinical trials and systematic reviews have demonstrated cure rates exceeding 80% for recurrent CDI using FMT. The use of specific probiotic strains (e.g., Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium) has also been investigated for prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and, in some cases, for adjunctive treatment of other infections, though results are more mixed and dependent on the strain and condition.
This therapeutic approach is grounded in the understanding that maintaining or restoring a balanced microbiome can inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, either by direct competition or by modulating the host’s immune response. However, while the evidence is robust for certain indications like recurrent CDI, the scientific support is less strong for other types of bacterial infections, and use outside of these contexts should be considered experimental or investigational. Regulatory agencies such as the FDA recognize FMT as a treatment option for recurrent CDI under specific conditions.
