Evidence supporting the use of: Bassia scoparia
For the health condition: Infection (bacterial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bassia scoparia (commonly known as Kochia or burning bush) has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is referred to as "Di Fu Zi." Traditionally, the seeds and other parts of the plant have been used for a variety of ailments, including as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and for relieving skin conditions such as eczema and pruritus. Some traditional texts and pharmacopeias mention its use for treating infections, particularly those involving the urinary tract and skin, likely due to its perceived "heat-clearing" and detoxifying properties. However, scientific validation for its antibacterial activity is limited and mostly restricted to in vitro studies, which have shown weak to moderate antibacterial effects against certain strains of bacteria. These findings are not robust enough to support clinical use for bacterial infections. No well-designed human trials have established its efficacy or safety for treating infections. Therefore, while its use for infection is supported by tradition, the scientific evidence remains weak, and it should not be relied upon as a primary or sole treatment for bacterial infections.
