Bifidobacterium longum is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in the human gut, and its use for supporting or treating bacterial infections has some scientific basis, though the evidence is not robust. Preclinical and some clinical studies suggest that B. longum can positively influence the gut microbiota, enhance the intestinal barrier, and modulate the immune response, which may help in defending against certain bacterial pathogens. For example, B. longum has demonstrated the ability to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Clostridium difficile in vitro and in animal models. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that B. longum supplementation can reduce the incidence or duration of infectious diarrhea, particularly in children and in the context of antibiotic-associated disturbances of the gut microbiome. Additionally, B. longum may decrease the risk of secondary bacterial infections by maintaining healthy gut flora during antibiotic use.

However, the evidence is still limited in scope and quality, with relatively few large-scale, high-quality RCTs specifically examining B. longum for the treatment or prevention of bacterial infections outside the gut. The existing studies often use probiotic blends, making it hard to attribute effects solely to B. longum. Thus, while there is a plausible mechanism and some supportive data, the scientific evidence is currently moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5 for its use in treating or supporting bacterial infections.
