Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cockroaches have a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in China, where extracts from certain species (such as Periplaneta americana) have been employed to treat a range of ailments, including infections and wounds. The rationale for their use lies in folk beliefs about the insect’s resilience and supposed antimicrobial properties. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulas containing cockroach extracts have been used topically for wound healing, burns, and sometimes as part of remedies for infections.

Scientifically, several laboratory studies have investigated cockroach extracts for antimicrobial activity. Some in vitro research has demonstrated that certain extracts or peptides derived from cockroaches can inhibit the growth of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. However, these findings are preliminary and largely confined to laboratory settings. There is little to no robust clinical evidence in humans confirming the efficacy or safety of cockroach-derived products for treating bacterial infections. The bulk of support, therefore, comes from traditional use rather than scientifically validated clinical studies.

In summary, the use of cockroach in support or treatment of bacterial infection is primarily justified by traditional practices, with only low-level scientific evidence (mostly in vitro) and no substantial clinical validation to date.
