Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus mixed)
For the health condition: Infection (bacterial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lactobacillus species, often administered as mixed probiotic formulations, have scientific support for adjunctive use in preventing and treating certain types of bacterial infections, particularly those affecting the gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. Clinical studies and meta-analyses indicate that Lactobacillus probiotics can help restore normal microbiota balance, outcompete pathogenic bacteria, and modulate immune responses. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that some Lactobacillus strains (such as L. rhamnosus GG and L. reuteri) may reduce the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis and decrease the duration of some types of infectious diarrhea, especially in children. The proposed mechanisms include production of lactic acid and bacteriocins, competitive exclusion of pathogens, and enhancement of mucosal barrier function. However, the efficacy varies depending on the strain, formulation, dose, and the specific infection being targeted. While probiotics are not a substitute for antibiotics in treating acute bacterial infections, they have demonstrated benefit as an adjunct to therapy, particularly in reducing antibiotic-associated side effects and the risk of secondary infections like Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. The overall quality of evidence is moderate, with more robust support in prevention than in treatment of established infections, and some heterogeneity among studies. Thus, Lactobacillus mixed probiotics are scientifically validated for specific bacterial infection-related indications, but are not universally effective across all types of bacterial infections.
