Lactoperoxidase is an enzyme naturally present in milk and various bodily secretions, such as saliva and tears. Its primary function is to catalyze the oxidation of thiocyanate ions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, generating products with potent antimicrobial properties. Scientific research has demonstrated that lactoperoxidase possesses significant antibacterial activity, particularly against a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The lactoperoxidase system is a well-characterized component of the innate immune defense, especially in the oral cavity and on mucosal surfaces, where it inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Escherichia coli. Numerous in vitro and some in vivo studies have shown that lactoperoxidase can reduce microbial load and prevent infection. For example, it is used in dental care products and certain food preservation systems to limit bacterial contamination. Its efficacy is particularly noted in oral health, where it helps suppress the growth of bacteria responsible for dental caries and periodontal disease. However, while the antimicrobial mechanism is well understood and the enzyme is widely applied in oral and food hygiene, clinical evidence for its effectiveness in treating systemic bacterial infections in humans is limited. Most scientific validation supports its use for local infection control rather than as a systemic antibacterial treatment. Therefore, while the use of lactoperoxidase to support treatment or prevention of bacterial infection is grounded in scientific evidence, its direct application as a therapeutic agent for infections beyond the oral or topical context remains an area for further research.
