Lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid predominantly found in coconut oil and palm kernel oil, is recognized for its antimicrobial properties, especially against certain bacteria. The mechanism primarily involves its conversion in the body to monolaurin, a monoglyceride that can disrupt lipid-coated bacterial cell membranes, leading to cell disintegration. In vitro studies demonstrate that lauric acid and monolaurin exhibit inhibitory effects against various Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species. There is also evidence for activity against some Gram-negative bacteria and certain viruses.

However, the majority of supportive evidence comes from laboratory studies rather than clinical trials in humans. While traditional diets high in coconut oil (and thus lauric acid) have been linked to general health and resistance to infection in some populations, direct clinical evidence supporting lauric acid supplementation for the treatment or prevention of bacterial infections in humans is limited. A few small-scale studies and animal models hint at a potential protective effect, but large, well-conducted human trials are lacking.

In summary, while lauric acid possesses scientifically validated antibacterial properties in experimental settings, the level of clinical evidence for its use as a treatment or support for bacterial infections in humans is low.
