Evidence supporting the use of: LH01-myoviridae
For the health condition: Infection (bacterial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
LH01-myoviridae refers to a bacteriophage, a type of virus that specifically infects and lyses bacteria. The use of bacteriophages, including LH01-myoviridae, to treat bacterial infections is grounded in scientific research rather than tradition. Phage therapy, the therapeutic use of bacteriophages to treat pathogenic bacterial infections, has a history dating back to the early 20th century but has seen renewed scientific interest due to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Specifically, LH01-myoviridae is a lytic phage, meaning it destroys its bacterial host upon replication, which makes it a potential tool against bacterial pathogens including Escherichia coli and other clinically relevant bacteria. Scientific studies have demonstrated that such bacteriophages can effectively reduce bacterial load in vitro and in animal models. Some early-phase clinical trials and compassionate use cases have reported positive outcomes in humans, especially for infections that do not respond to conventional antibiotics.
However, while the scientific rationale is strong and laboratory/animal studies are promising, large-scale, randomized controlled trials in humans are still limited. Regulatory approval for phage therapies is also at an early stage in most countries, which affects widespread clinical implementation. Thus, the scientific evidence can be rated as moderate (3/5), acknowledging promising preclinical and early clinical results but recognizing the need for more robust human data to fully validate the therapy.
