Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) are prebiotic compounds derived primarily from the cell walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. Their use to support or treat bacterial infections is supported by some scientific evidence, especially in veterinary and animal nutrition fields, though evidence in humans is limited. MOS are known to bind to certain pathogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp., preventing these bacteria from adhering to the intestinal lining. This anti-adhesive property may reduce the risk of infection and support gut health. Several animal studies, particularly in poultry, pigs, and aquaculture, have demonstrated that dietary MOS supplementation can reduce pathogen colonization and improve immune parameters, leading to lower incidence of bacterial infections and diarrhea. However, robust, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most human studies are preliminary or extrapolated from animal research. While the mechanism of action is biologically plausible and supported by in vitro and animal data, the overall level of evidence remains moderate to low for direct treatment or prevention of bacterial infections in humans. Thus, MOS may be considered a supportive measure for gut health and infection risk reduction, particularly in animal health, but its efficacy for treating bacterial infections in humans is not well established.
