Evidence supporting the use of: Prebiotic (unspecified)
For the health condition: Infection (bacterial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Prebiotics are non-digestible food components, typically fibers such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and galactooligosaccharides (GOS), that support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. There is a growing body of scientific evidence suggesting that prebiotics can play a role in reducing the risk of certain bacterial infections, particularly those involving the gastrointestinal tract. Prebiotics enhance populations of commensal bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, which can competitively inhibit pathogenic bacteria by producing antimicrobial compounds, enhancing the intestinal barrier, and modulating immune responses.
Clinical studies have shown that prebiotic supplementation may reduce the incidence or severity of infections such as Clostridioides difficile, Salmonella, and pathogenic Escherichia coli, especially in vulnerable populations (e.g., infants, the elderly, or hospitalized patients). Additionally, some research demonstrates that prebiotics can decrease the rates of respiratory and urinary tract infections, although findings are mixed and more high-quality research is needed.
Despite promising results, the overall level of evidence remains moderate (rated 3/5) due to variability in the types and doses of prebiotics studied, as well as differences in outcome measures. Therefore, while prebiotics are not a replacement for antibiotics or established infection treatments, they may offer adjunctive benefits for infection prevention, particularly in the context of gut-associated bacterial infections.
