Saccharomyces, particularly the species Saccharomyces boulardii, has scientific support for its use in helping manage certain bacterial infections, especially those affecting the gastrointestinal tract. S. boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been studied for its role in preventing and treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea, including that caused by Clostridioides difficile (formerly Clostridium difficile). Clinical trials and meta-analyses indicate that S. boulardii can reduce the incidence and duration of diarrhea in both adults and children taking antibiotics.
