Traditionally, various parts of the plant, such as leaves, seeds, and roots, have been used to manage a range of ailments, including bacterial infections, fever, and skin diseases. Ethnobotanical surveys document its use for treating infections, especially in rural communities where access to modern antibiotics may be limited. The basis for its use stems from anecdotal reports and longstanding cultural practices rather than robust clinical trials.
Some preliminary laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts of Senna occidentalis possess mild antibacterial activity against certain bacterial strains in vitro.
