Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Streptomyces cellulosae is a species of actinomycete bacteria well-known for its ability to produce a variety of bioactive secondary metabolites, including antibiotics. The genus Streptomyces is the source of many clinically important antibiotics, and while S. cellulosae itself is less famous than, for example, Streptomyces griseus (the source of streptomycin), it has nonetheless been studied for its antimicrobial properties. Several research articles and patents report that S. cellulosae produces antibacterial compounds, such as cellulostatins and other novel antibiotics, which have demonstrated activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro. These findings provide a scientific basis for its use in the development of treatments for bacterial infections.

However, it is important to note that while S. cellulosae has been a source for the discovery and laboratory validation of antibiotic compounds, it is not itself used directly in clinical settings to treat infections. Rather, its metabolites (purified antibiotics) are the agents of interest. The evidence rating is not 5 because, to date, no antibiotic derived specifically from S. cellulosae has become a mainstay clinical drug, and most supporting data are preclinical. Nonetheless, the scientific literature validates the antibacterial activity of its products, justifying ongoing research and potential therapeutic applications.
