T4D-myoviridae refers to a group of bacteriophages, specifically T4-like phages within the family Myoviridae, that infect and lyse bacterial cells. The use of bacteriophages for treating bacterial infections, known as "phage therapy," has a long history dating back to the early 20th century, but its modern application is grounded in growing scientific evidence, especially in the context of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Several preclinical studies and clinical case reports have demonstrated the effectiveness of T4-like myoviruses against pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These phages act by specifically attaching to bacterial cells and injecting their genetic material, leading to bacterial lysis and death without harming human cells or beneficial microbiota.
Recent scientific validation includes successful compassionate-use cases where phage preparations containing T4-like myoviruses cleared otherwise untreatable infections. Furthermore, a number of controlled trials and animal model studies have shown efficacy in reducing bacterial load and improving outcomes in infection models.
