White-leaf Manzanita (Arctostaphylos viscida) has traditional uses among Native American groups, particularly in California and the western United States. The leaves of manzanita species, including White-leaf Manzanita, have been used historically as a poultice or tea to treat minor infections, particularly of the urinary tract, and for wounds or sores. This practice is largely based on empirical tradition rather than rigorous scientific study. The antimicrobial activity is likely attributed to the presence of arbutin and related phenolic compounds, which are known to be present in various Arctostaphylos species (and more famously in the related Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, or bearberry). However, while some laboratory studies have shown that arbutin and certain extracts from manzanita species possess antibacterial properties in vitro, there is a lack of specific scientific research focused on Arctostaphylos viscida itself. No clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have confirmed its efficacy or safety for treating bacterial infections in humans. Therefore, the use of White-leaf Manzanita for bacterial infections is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with only indirect or preliminary scientific rationale, and should be approached with caution.
