Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Agaricus blazei Murill, commonly known as Almond mushroom, has a long history of traditional use in Brazil, Japan, and China as a folk remedy to support immune health and fight infections, including viral illnesses. The mushroom is valued in traditional medicine for its supposed ability to enhance the body’s natural defenses. However, while some in vitro and animal studies have suggested immunomodulatory and antiviral effects of polysaccharides and other compounds found in Almond mushroom, there is limited high-quality clinical research specifically validating its efficacy against viral infections in humans. The majority of available evidence supporting its use for viral infections is anecdotal or based on preliminary studies, and it is largely rooted in tradition rather than robust scientific validation. Some small studies and reviews have reported enhanced immune parameters (such as increased NK cell activity) in humans, but direct clinical trials demonstrating clear antiviral benefits are lacking. Therefore, while Almond mushroom continues to be used traditionally for infection support, especially in East Asian and South American herbal practices, its use for viral infections is not yet strongly supported by rigorous clinical trials.
