Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aloe macroclada, a species of aloe native to Madagascar, is traditionally used in Malagasy folk medicine for a variety of health conditions, including infectious diseases such as viral infections. Ethnobotanical surveys and reports have documented the use of this plant as a general remedy to "boost immunity" or treat fevers and illnesses often attributed to infections, though specific viral targets are usually not identified in the literature. The basis for these uses is primarily anecdotal and rooted in traditional knowledge passed down through generations. There is a lack of direct scientific studies evaluating the antiviral activity of Aloe macroclada specifically. While some related aloe species (such as Aloe vera) have shown limited in vitro antiviral effects, these findings cannot be reliably generalized to Aloe macroclada. To date, no clinical trials or robust laboratory studies have confirmed antiviral efficacy for this species. Therefore, while traditional use for infection is well-documented, the scientific evidence supporting its antiviral effectiveness is minimal or absent.
