Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alstonia scholaris, commonly known as the devil tree, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for treating a variety of ailments, including infections and fevers. Specifically, its bark and leaves have been used to address respiratory tract infections, malaria, and other febrile illnesses, which may be caused by viral or bacterial agents. The rationale for its use in treating "viral infections" is thus grounded in traditional practice rather than robust scientific evidence. While some recent in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Alstonia scholaris possess immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and some antiviral properties, clinical data in humans are lacking or insufficient. The majority of published research focuses on antibacterial, antimalarial, or general anti-inflammatory effects rather than direct activity against specific human viral pathogens. Therefore, its use for viral infections is justified primarily by tradition, with limited preclinical studies suggesting possible mechanisms, but without strong scientific validation or clinical trials supporting efficacy for this indication.
