Evidence supporting the use of: Andrographis paniculata
For the health condition: Infection (viral)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Andrographis paniculata, commonly known as "king of bitters," has been traditionally used in Asian medicine for centuries to treat infections, including those of viral origin. Modern scientific research has begun to validate these uses, particularly for upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) such as the common cold and influenza-like illnesses. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated standardized extracts of Andrographis, often under the trade name Kan Jang, showing that it may reduce the severity and duration of symptoms in uncomplicated URTIs. The proposed mechanisms include immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and direct antiviral effects—especially from the major diterpene lactone, andrographolide.
However, while evidence supports its use in mild viral infections, results are mixed and more robust studies are needed to confirm efficacy, especially for more serious viral illnesses. The majority of clinical research focuses on symptom relief rather than direct antiviral activity, and most studies are of short duration with modest sample sizes. Therefore, while there is scientific support for Andrographis paniculata in the context of mild viral infections, particularly for symptom management in colds and flu, the evidence does not strongly extend to other viral infections or to use as a primary antiviral treatment. Safety profiles are generally favorable in short-term use, but longer-term safety data are limited.
