Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Artepillin-C is a phenolic compound primarily found in Brazilian green propolis. Scientific studies have indicated that Artepillin-C may possess antiviral properties, but the evidence is currently limited to preclinical research. In vitro studies have demonstrated that Artepillin-C can inhibit the replication of certain viruses, such as influenza and herpes simplex virus, by interfering with viral entry or replication processes. Additionally, Artepillin-C is known for its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects, which could contribute indirectly to the body’s defense against viral infections.

However, there are no robust clinical trials or large-scale human studies to unequivocally validate its efficacy for treating or preventing viral infections. Most of the existing evidence comes from cell culture experiments, animal models, or general studies on propolis extracts that contain multiple active compounds. While these findings are promising and suggest a scientific rationale for further exploration, they do not provide strong clinical recommendations at this time. Therefore, scientific support exists, but it is preliminary and not yet sufficient for definitive therapeutic use against viral infections.
