Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aster tataricus, known as "Zi Wan" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use primarily as an expectorant and remedy for coughs, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. Its inclusion in TCM formulas is based on its purported ability to clear phlegm and relieve cough, especially those associated with chronic or lingering infections. Traditionally, it is believed to "disperse lung qi" and alleviate symptoms associated with respiratory tract infections, which are often viral in nature. However, while historical texts and modern TCM practice cite its use for coughs related to infection, there is limited direct evidence from clinical or laboratory studies specifically validating its antiviral activity or efficacy against viral infections in humans. Some in vitro studies suggest certain components of Aster tataricus may have antimicrobial or antiviral properties, but these findings are preliminary and not yet substantiated by robust clinical trials. Therefore, its use for viral infection is primarily tradition-based, with only modest scientific support at the preclinical level. The evidence supporting its efficacy for viral infections is thus rated as low to moderate, reflecting the predominance of historical use over scientific validation.
