Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Belamcanda, also known as Belamcanda chinensis or "she gan" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for conditions believed to be related to "toxic heat," including throat infections and inflammation. In TCM practice, Belamcanda rhizomes are used to "clear heat," resolve phlegm, and relieve sore throat and swelling, which are sometimes linked to viral infections in TCM diagnostic frameworks. However, this traditional use is not based on modern virological understanding, but rather on syndrome differentiation in TCM.

There is limited scientific research on the direct antiviral effects of Belamcanda extracts. Some in vitro studies have identified flavonoids and isoflavonoids (such as tectorigenin) in Belamcanda with potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, but robust clinical or preclinical evidence for its efficacy against specific viral infections is lacking. Most references to Belamcanda for viral infections are rooted in traditional use, particularly for conditions like pharyngitis or tonsillitis, which may be viral or bacterial in origin. Thus, while Belamcanda is traditionally used for symptoms that could be caused by viral infection, scientific validation for its specific antiviral activity remains limited.
